July 22, 2024
With the 2024 season coming closer and closer every day one of the big steps comes on July 23rd with the start of training camp, like the 2023 season there is an enormous amount of hype around the 2024 Jets. Here are 3 top storylines to look out for in this year's training camp.
A new-look wide receiver room
One of the main goals for the offseason in 2024 was to add more weapons on the offensive side of the ball, they did that by adding 2 new receivers Mike Williams and Malachi Corley. The main star of the wide receiver group is 3rd-year receiver Garrett Wilson who is coming from back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and achieved that with 3 different QBs in 2023 and 4 different QBs in 2022, but has yet to catch a pass from Aaron Rodgers in the regular season. The assumptive WR2 is Mike Williams who is starting the season on the PUP list coming off an ACL tear but should be ready for the start of the regular season, the newcomer for the Jets has had over 700 yards 4 times in his career. From there on out it's a question of who the WR3 is, it could be rookie Malachi Corley, Allen Lazard, or Xavier Gipson. One of the big things that can come from training camp is who it will be, Allen Lazard had a down year last year but he was a great player with Rodgers in Green Bay, Xavier Gipson showed flashes last year, and Malachi Corley could shine but the Jets have been known to ease in rookie WR into their season.
When and will Haason Reddick report for Training Camp?
Over this past offseason, the Jets traded for edge rusher Haason Reddick from the Eagles to fill the hole of Bryce Huff. Haason Reddick has put up 10+ sacks in the past 4 seasons and coming off an 11-sack season and a 16-sack season the year before that. But since he was traded he has been waiting for an extension as his contract ends at the end of the year. After he missed the OTA’s for an unexcused reason he was fined $50,000 but as mandatory Training Camp comes he will be fined $50,000 each day he does not report. This problem did come around in 2010 when Darrelle Revis held out until September 5th, he did not attend any of the practices and was fined $578,305 but the holdout did not affect his year, he would go on being an all-pro.
A revamped offensive line
The biggest goal and accomplishment for the Jets this offseason was revamping their disastrous offensive line. They started quickly this offseason signing Ravens guard John Simpson, trading for former Jet tackle Morgan Moses, signing All-Pro tackle Tyron Smith from the Cowboys, and drafting Penn State tackle Olu Fashanu with the 11th pick. Those additions will join PFWA All-Rookie player Joe Tippmann at center and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. The presumptive starters will be Tyron Smith at LT, John Simpson at LG, Joe Tippmann at C, Alijah Vera-Tucker at RG, and Morgan Moses at RT which is all completely better than 2023.
Now that the wait is finally over the Jets training camp is about to begin and football season is right around the corner.
