In his 7 seasons as HC, he had 2 playoff appearances, in 2009 and 2010 when he took the Jets to the AFC Championship both times. Ryan was fired from both jobs.
Brian Flores - Submitted request - (Former Dolphins HC and current Vikings DC)
Brian Flores was a decent coach in his time with the Dolphins as HC and has put together a good defense in Minnesota. As the Dolphins head coach Flores finished his tenure with a 24-25 record through 3 years, 2019, 2020, and 2021. He led the Vikings to back-to-back winning seasons in 2020 and 2021 after a 5-11 season in 2019. After getting fired in 2021 he went from being defensive assistant with the Steelers to Viking DC where in 2024 he helped the Vikings to the 16th-ranked total defense in 2024 and 16th-ranked defense in 2023, improving from being ranked 31st in 2022.
Josh McCown - Submitted request - (Current Vikings QB Coach)
Another familiar name is Josh McCown who was the starting QB for the Jets in 2017 and was the backup to Sam Darnold in 2018. After retiring McCown went from being the Panthers QB Coach in 2023 to Vikings QB Coach in 2024. As QB Coach, McCown has helped Sam Darnold to a Pro Bowl year where he finished with 4,319 passing yards, 35 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
Joe Brady - Submitted request - (Current Bills OC)
This is now the second time the Jets have interviewed Joe Brady for the head coach position, the first coming in 2021. In 2020 and 2021 Brady was the Panthers OC before he was fired, that offseason he was then hired as Bills QB Coach to help coach Pro Bowler Josh Allen. After a season and a half as Bills QB Coach, he was hired as interim OC of the Bills when they fired the OC Ken Dorsey after a 5-5 start. When he was hired he helped turn around the Bills season quickly by finishing the season 6-1 and making the playoffs at an 11-6 record. In 2024 Brady was named permanent OC and this year he has coached and played calls for a top 5 offense and helped lead Josh Allen to a potential MVP season.
Matt Nagy - Submitted request - (Former Bears HC and current Chiefs OC)
The Jets plan to interview another experienced head coach, Matt Nagy. Matt Nagy has worked with Andy Reid from his time in Philidelphia, when Reid went to Kansas City, Nagy followed, working on the offensive side of the ball in both cities. Then, in 2018 the Bears hired Nagy to become head coach. In his first year, Nagy coached the Bears to a 12-4 record and lost in the Wild Card. For the next 3 seasons Bears never finished above .500 and only made the playoffs once. After the 2021 season, Nagy was fired and finished with a 34-31 regular season record and 0-2 playoff record.
Arthur Smith - Submitted request - (Former Falcons HC, Current Steelers OC)
Back in the 2021 coaching cycle the Jets interviewed Arthur Smith for the head coaching position when he was the Titians OC but Arthur Smith went to the Falcons instead. In Atlanta, Smith coached for 3 seasons and finished 7-10 each year completing his time with the Falcons at a 21-30 record. Since getting fired after the 2023 season Smith picked up the Steelers OC job and in 2024 has coached them to the 23rd ranked total offense as the play caller.
Brian Griese - Submitted request - (49ers QB coach)
Before being hired as 49ers QB Coach in 2022 Brian Griese did not have any coaching experience. In his first year as QB Coach, he dealt with 3 different QBs, Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Brock Purdy. That year they finished with the 13th most passing yards and 4th in touchdowns. The next 2 seasons in 2023 and 2024 were with Brock Purdy, in 2023 the 49ers were 4th in passing yards, and 2nd in passing touchdowns, and 2024 they were 4th in passing yards and 13th in passing touchdowns.
Aaron Glenn - Submitted request - (Lions DC)
A main part of the Lions successful turnaround has been their defense which has been a lot due to Lions DC Aaron Glenn. Glenn, a former Jet, took over in 2021 as defensive coordinator and in his first 2 years it was very disappointing, the Lions were one of the worst defensive teams in the NFL. Since 2023 however, Glenn helped turn the defense into a top 10 defense and develop starts like Aidan Hutchenson.
Vance Joseph - Submitted request - (Former Broncos HC and Current Broncos DC)
Another former Jet, Vance Joseph is set to have an interview for the head coaching position. From 2017-2018 Vance Joseph was head coach of the Broncos and put up an 11-21 record which led him to getting fired after 2 years. After being fired he went to Arizona to become DC from 2019-2022 before he returned to the Broncos to become DC in 2023. In 2023 the Broncos had a bottom 5 defense but in 2024 they are top 10 in almost every defensive category.
Bobby Slowik - Submitted request - (Texans OC)
So far, the final submitted request the Jets have sent is Texans OC Bobby Slowik. The young 37-year-old coach was hired as Texans OC in 2023 but before that, he worked under the Shanahan tree as the 49ers offensive pass game coordinator (2022), offensive pass game specialist (2021), offensive assistant (2019-2020), and defensive quality control coach (2017-2018). In his first year as Texans OC, he was the play caller for the 12th ranked passing offense and 22nd ranked rushing offense while helping the Texans to a playoff birth and CJ Stroud becoming OROY. In 2024 the offense regressed, being 22nd in passing and 21st in rushing.
As of now, those are the 12 guys the Jets have submitted requests, interviewed, or scheduled interviews for.
