Are Nimmo and Lindor All-Star Snubs? Yes.
July 11, 2024
With the All-Star game just around the corner and the teams already selected, some players, like Fransisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo, were left out and should be competing in the All-Star game next week.
Brandon Nimmo this year has a .252 average, 15 home runs, and 58 RBIs through 85 games. The 31-year-old outfielder is 1st in runs, 2nd in fWAR, 2nd in wRC+, 2nd in OPS+, 2nd in WPA, 3rd in wOBA, 4th in OPS, 4th in HR, 4th in RBI among NL outfielders, he is also one of just 3 hitters who were in the top 15 of the NL fWAR leaders that did not to make the all-star team, Nimmo ranks 3rd in all NL outfielders in fWAR, the 2 players above him made the All-Star game, so did the 3 below him. Nimmo has also been one of the hottest outfielders in baseball since June 1st, since then he has been batting .310, with 9 homers and 30 RBIs through just 32 games. If you think the stats that prove Nimmo should be an all-star stops there you are wrong, according to Baseball Savant Nimmo is in the 90th percentile of all MLB players in xwOBA, batting run value, average exit velocity, walk percentage, hard-hit percentage, and launch angle sweet spot percentage.
With Fransico Lindor on the other hand his case is just as strong as Brandon Nimmo. Lindor this year has been batting .253, 16 homers, 48 RBIs, and 93 hits in 90 games. Lindor started his 2024 hot streak when he moved to the lead-off spot on May 18th, since then he has had a .299 batting average, 9 home runs, 27 RBIs, and 59 hits, and his 1st in the league in OBP in lead-off hitters 1st AB of the game with .435 which is .015 more than 2nd place. There is some common ground between Nimmo and Lindor in this All-Star snub discussion, they are 2 of the 3 hitters who were in the top 15 of the NL fWAR leaders that did not make the all-star team, Lindor ranks second in fWAR for shortstops, the 1 player above him made the All-Star team and so did the 1 below him. In just WAR Lindor ranks 5th among all MLB players and he is the only player in the top 10 to not make the all-star game. To add to all this only 15 players in MLB history have recorded 15+ HR, 25+ doubles, and 15+ stolen bases before the all-star break and of those 15 players, Lindor is the only player not make the All-Star game. On defense, Lindor is in the 97th percentile of fielding range and 7th in fielding percentage among NL shortstops, 2 NL all-star shortstops are below him and 1 is above him.
Now Lindor has yet to make an All-Star appearance as a Met and Nimmo has yet to even make an all-star, and it is proven those 2 should be playing in Arlington, Texas next week.
