Mets Drop Series to Astros
July 1, 2024
The recent series for the Mets began with a great high but concluded on a disappointing note, marking their first series loss in over a month.
The first of 3 games for the Mets started high with a 7-2 win. On the bump for the Mets was Jose Quintana, Jose had a very mediocre start. Starting in the top of the 1st inning Jose gave up a home run to Jose Altuve, the next inning Quintana would allow 0 runs before giving up a run to Jeremy Peña in the 3rd. Jose Quintana would only pitch 1 more inning leaving his stat line at 6 hits allowed, 2 ER, 3 walks, 7 strikeouts in 4 innings pitched. The hitting on the other hand was tremendous, the Mets had a total of 9 hits with 6 players contributing. The most outstanding player was Jeff McNeil, McNeil went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s and a home run. Pitcher Reed Garrett would eventually close things out to get the save and lock in the 7-2 win for the Mets.
The second game of the series was an embarrassing loss by the Mets and one we have not seen since May. The game started great for the Amazin’s by winning 6-1 by the bottom of the 3rd inning. However, when the top of the 4th rolled around starter Tylor Megill would give up 3 runs to cut the Astro's lead to just 2. After a shutout 5th inning for Tylor, his day would be done after 5.1 innings, giving up 4 runs and 5 hits. Up until the 8th inning there was no action when Jake Diekman entered the game and gave up the tying run without making it through the rest of the 8th inning, the rest of the 8th inning was pitched by Reed Garrett and Danny Young. Reed Garrett would give up 1 run to give the Astros the lead. The rest of the day would be pitched by Danny Young who just added fuel to the fire, giving up 2 runs on 1.1 innings pitched. After the Mets failed to score in the 9th inning and shut out for the final 6 innings that would end the ball game at 9-6.
As Sunday afternoon came around it was the series decider with Luis Severino Pitching for the Mets and Shawn Dubin on the mound of the Astros. The game started very slow for the Mets as they were no-hit through the first 5 innings and gave up 4 runs to Jonathan Singleton, Yainer Diaz, Jake Meyers and Jose Altuve. The next 2 innings in the 6th and 7th were much more promising as Mark Vientos knocked in 2 runs on a double and Brandon Nimmo homering to flip the game upside down and make the score 4-4. The game would enter extra innings after both teams didn't do anything in the 8th and 9th inning. The Astros started hot in the top of the 10th scoring a run to grab the lead. In the bottom of the 10th the Mets answered right back with Brandon Nimmo scoring a double to make the score 5-5. When the 11th inning came Matt Festa who was just called up from Syracuse the morning of entered the game. The 31 year old’s first appearance in orange and blue did not go well at all, Festa gave up 4 hits, 5 runs, and 1 walk to make the score 10-5 heading into the bottom of the 11th. The Mets would go on to score 0 runs in the 11th and lose the ball game.
This series started really strong for the Mets but after back-to-back games of horrendous bullpen pitching their series was ruined. With Christian Scott getting called back up and likely pitching on Tuesday to take over Tylor Megill’s spot there's some hope the back end of the Mets rotation can come together.
Next up is NL East rival Washington Nationals in a 4 game series as the Mets fight to reach above .500 as they dip just below .500 today.
