The New York Mets could not get the job done against the Phillies in the final 2 games of the series to lose 2 of the 3 in Philadelphia.
In the series' first game, the Mets looked great, beating the Phillies 11-3. Mets starting pitch Jose Quintana was on fire today, pitching 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 0 walks, 0 runs, and 4 striking out 4 batters. The Mets put together a 14-hit game where we saw 3 3-run home runs from Fransisco Alvarez, Brandon Nimmo, and Harrison Bader. Fransisco Lindor had an RBI double and Pete Alonso had a solo home run. The Mets came out of game 1 with a W and improved to 81-66.
In the second game of the series, the Mets started hot but fell short in a 6-4 loss. The Mets got ahead of the Phillies 4-0 in the 3rd inning with Marte walking when bases were loaded, Vientos scoring on an error and Marte hitting a 2 RBI triple that brought Nimmo and Alonso home. That lead wouldn’t last long, in the 4th and 6th innings Bryce Harper hit 2 home runs to cut the lead to 4-3, and in the 7th inning, Cal Stevenson hit a 2-run double to put the Phillies in the lead. And in the 8th inning, the Phillies added an insurance run to make the 6-4. The game ended 6-4 and the series was tied heading into the final game of the series.
In the series decider on Sunday afternoon the Mets walked off, losing 2-1 and falling to 81-68 on the year. Lefty starter David Peterson had yet another amazing day on the mound, pitching 7.2 innings, giving up 1 run, 4 hits, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. The Mets offense on the other hand was not up to par they only had 1 run on 7 hits, the only run came in the top of the 8th inning when Tyrone Taylor hit a solo home run. In the bottom of the 8th, the Phillies tied it up scoring one run and in the 9th inning, Edwin Diaz came into the game and gave up a walk-off RBI single. The Mets would drop this game 2-1.
The Mets are still tied with the Braves for the last wild card spot and the Mets will head back home to play the Nationals 3 times and the Phillies 4 times this coming week.
