July 14, 2024
Heading into this series with the Rockies the Mets were riding a 3-game win streak and holding the last spot in the NL Wild Card race and the Mets won this series continuing their hot streak.
In the series' first game, the Mets extended their win streak to 4 games in a row. In the top of the 2nd, the Rockies scored first with a Michael Toglia 2-run home run. The Mets answered quickly with a 3 homerun inning from Vientos, Iglesias, and Bader to put the Mets up 3-2. The Mets continued their run in extending leads in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings, in the 3rd Vientos doubled to bring in Alvarez, in the 4th Bader homered for the second time, and in the 5th Iglesias homered for the second time for the first time in his career. All of that put the Mets up 7-2. In the 7th and 8th innings, the Rockies homered 3 times to cut the lead to 1, and in the 9th innings, Edwin Diaz came in and closed out the 7-6 win for the Mets.
Now with a 4 game win streak, the Mets held the second wild card spot and with Christian Scott pitching for the Mets and Ryan Feltner pitching for the Rockies the Mets looked to extend that win streak. At the start of the game, the Mets jumped on Ryan Feltner early in the 2nd innings when Alonso and DJ Stewart scored on a Luis Torrens fielder choice, and Jeff McNeil double to bring home Gamel and Torrens. In the 3rd inning, Jake Cave homered for the Rockies, and in the 5th Charlie Blackmon hit a 2-run home run. Both teams would go silent until the 8th inning when Lindor hit a 3-run home run to make the score 7-3. In this game, the Met's bullpen was on point thanks to Jose Butto who pitched 2.2 IP, 1 hit, and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts, he relived Christian Scott in the 5th inning, Dedniel Núñez closed out the game by pitching 2 innings allowing 0 hits, 0 walks and 3 strikeouts. The Mets would go on to win this game 7-3 and furthered their win streak to 5 games.
In the 3rd and final game of the series, the Mets snapped their 5-game winning streak in a game where the Mets struggled with men on bases and pitching struggled from start to finish. Right from the gate in the top of the 1st inning, the Rockies got up 2-0 on an Ezequiel Tovar 2-run home run. Both teams did not score until the bottom of the 4th inning when Pete Alonso hit a 2-run home run to tie the game and Lindor was walked when the bases were loaded to bring in 1 run and make the score 3-2, from there the Mets left 3 men stranded on base and failed to score. In the top of the 5th, the Rockies answered with a Toglia solo shot to even things at 3, in the 6th Doyle hit a home run and Togolia hit his second home run of the day to make the score 5-3. Then in the 7th inning, things got worse for the Mets, Tovar hit his second home run of the game and in the 8th Togolia hit his third home run of the day to make the score 8-3. In the bottom of the 8th, the Mets started their attempted comeback when Jeff McNeil hit a 2-run double and Nimmo brought home Tyrone Taylor in a fielder choice. In the 9th both teams would not score leading to the Mets losing 8-5 and dropping back to the 3rd wild card spot.
The Mets now enter a much-needed 4 days off for the All-Star break and are back after it on Friday, July 19th in Miami against a struggling 33-63 Marlins team.
