Coming off a series loss against the Angels and a 1 game series win against the Cardinals the Mets continued their west coast road trip with a series win vs the Rockies.
In the series' first game, the Mets dropped a disappointing game by losing 6-3. Luis Severino pitched another disappointing game coming off a 6 earned run out and this outing he gave up 5 runs, 4 ER, and 8 hits on 5 innings. Huascar Brazobán and Alex Young combined for 3 innings, 2 hits, and 1 earned run in the bullpen. On offense, Harrison Bader opened things with a 2-run single in the top of the 2nd, and in the 5th inning Brandon Nimmo hit an RBI single. The Mets would lose 6-3 and fall 1.5 back from the last wildcard spot.
In the second game of the series, the Mets grabbed the win after another great performance by Paul Blackburn. Blackburn pitched the first 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. In the bullpen Jose Butto continued his hot streak as a reliever pitching 2 innings, allowing 1 hit and 0 runs, and Edwin Diaz got the save by pitching 1 inning, getting 2 strikeouts, and allowing 1 hit. In the batters box the Mets scored 5 runs, first coming from a Pete Alonso solo homerun, the next coming from Tyrone Taylor hitting a single to bring home Jose Iglesias. In the top of the 9th when the Mets were tied 2-2 Lindor hit a single to bring home both Harrison Bader and Ben Gamel to give the Mets a 4-2 lead, in the 9th inning Jesse Winker singled to left to bring home the 5th run of the day. This 5-2 win for the Mets put them just 0.5 game back from the Braves who were in the last wild card spot.
In the series decider, the Mets won and scored 9 runs for the first time in 9 games. Lefty pitcher David Peterson had a great game, pitching 5 innings, allowing 4 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts. The Mets bullpen had another great game, Adam Ottavino, Ryne Stanek, and Danny Young combined for 3 innings, 3 hits, 0 walks, and 0 runs. On offense, the Mets started hot scoring 4 runs in the 1st innings. Jose Iglesias opened it up with a 1 run double, JD Martinez then hit another RBI double and Pete Alonso hit a 471-foot home run his first home run of the day to put the Mets up 4-0. In the 3rd inning, Pete Alonso hit a 451-foot home run for his second home run of the day, and in the 5th Mark Vientos hit a solo home run to put the Mets up 7-0. The Mets offense closed it out with a Lindor RBI single and a Jose Iglesias sacrifice fly in the 8th inning. The Mets would win the game 9-1 and move to the 3rd and final wild card spot in NL and a 0.5 above the Braves.
The Mets come out of this series winning 2 of 3 and will now head up to Seattle where they will face the Mariners in a 3-game series before having a day off and then a 9-game homestand.
