Mets Need to DFA Garrett
July 10, 2024
Although the New York Met's starting pitching, defense, and offense have been insanely good recently there is one terrible group of players, the bullpen. The bullpen in July has had a 10.57 ERA and 8.44 ERA since June 23rd. There are a couple of amazing pitchers in the bullpen like Edwin Diaz and Dedniel Núñez but other than that it is terrible, if you were to put these players in the Frontier league they would still be bad. The pitcher at the forefront of this atrocity is right-hander Reed Garrett.
Reed Garrett has not been inconsistent at all he has been very consistent, constantly bad. Since June first Garrett has an ERA of 4.85, with 19 strikeouts in 14 appearances. But as of recently, his game has been worse than ever since June 23rd when the bullpen has an 8.44 ERA he has a 7.11 ERA, and 8 strikeouts in just 8 appearances, and coming even closer since July 1st has a 9.00 ERA with 5 strikeouts in 4 appearances.
You can look at the overall stats of the player but if you do a deep dive into a player you can see some positives, but for Garrett there is none. As a relief pitcher being a holder to the lead is the most important thing you can do and Garrett can not hold on to a lead especially in the 8th innings, in the 8th inning he has pitched 8.2 innings having a 7.27 ERA, with 10 hits and 2 home runs. Garrett is also known to have one of the worst walk percentages, fastball run value, and pitching run value.
Now with Reed Garrett on a streak of allowing a hit 8 appearances in a row, it does not look like he will slow this down anytime soon, it would be in the best interest of the Mets to DFA Reed Garrett as soon as possible.
