As free agency comes to an end and Spring Training begins in under a month there is still 1 free agent that looms and that is Pete Alonso who is looking for a contract. As the days continue without a deal it seems more and more likely that he will not remain in New York. Here are 3 options the Mets can pivot to if Alonso leaves.
A common option and most likely option would be moving Vientos to first because of his first base experience as he started 70 games there in the minors and 14 in the major leagues.
Option 1 - Move Vientos to 1st and have a competition at 3rd
This is the most likely scenario that would come out if Alonso leaves, moving Vientos to 1st and having an open competition at 3rd base. The 3 players who would compete are Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio, and Luis Acuna. Having one of the 3 starting at 3rd base would give the Mets more youth in their lineup and all 3 players have very high floors. If this competition would occur Acuna won the competition because of his athleticism and offensive upside.
Option 2 - Move Vientos to 1st and sign Alex Bregman for 3rd
Adding a 2x All-Star to this Mets lineup would be the perfect way to fill the void of Alonso leaving. As of now, Bregman is a free agent and could be looking for a long-term deal as he enters at age 30 year. In 9 years in Houston, Bregman batted .272, had a .848 OBP, 191 home runs, and 663 RBIs. In 2024 Bregman had a .260 batting average, 26 homers, 75 RBIs, and a .453 slugging percentage.
Option 3 - Keep Vientos at 3rd and trade for Vladimir Geurrero Jr. (1st base)
Trading for Vladdy would be the most unlikely scenario but there have been rumors of it. In his short career, the 25-year-old has been a 4x All-Star, 2x Silver Slugger, and Gold Glove award winner. Guerrero is coming off one of his best seasons as he batted .323, with 30 homers, 103 RBIs, and a .544 slugging percentage. The trade price could be like the Soto trade a year ago as he is an impending free agent next offseason. The Mets would likely have to give up two or three top 5 prospects and an MLB ready player.
With Alonso likely leaving, one of these three options is bound to happen for the 2025 Mets.
