Mets Run NY: Mets Sweep Yankess
July 25, 2024
The Mets now sit at 53-48 after sweeping the Yankees for the second time this season, proving why they own New York.
In game one of the series, the Mets looked to take the 3rd game of the Subway Series from the Yankees. Jose Quintana was on the mound for the Mets who was coming off a 5-run appearance against the Rockies and Luis Gil was on the mound for the Yankees who was coming off back-to-back appearances where he allowed just 1 run. The game started with the Yankees drawing blood first with a Gleyber Torres solo home run. With the Yankees leading 1-0 in the 5th, the Mets tied it up with Lindor being hit by a pitch when the bases were loaded, and in the 6th Jeff McNeil hit a 2-run home run to give the Mets the lead. In the 6th inning, the Yankees answered with an Alex Verdugo double that brought home 1 run. The game finished at 3-2 with a huge Jake Diekman save to lock up the win.
In the second and final game of the series, the Mets went for the first subway sweep since 2013 when the Mets swept the Yankees in 4 games. On the mound for the Yankees was Gerrit Cole who the Mets destroyed the last time they faced him scoring 6 runs, this time was no different scoring 6 runs again bringing his career ERA against the Mets to a staggering 6.99. The Yankees offense was completely silent the whole night other than solo home runs from Juan Soto and Gleyber Torres. But the Mets on the other hand, everything was kicking, everything. Starting pitcher Sean Manaea pitched 4.2 innings, allowing 2 runs, 3 hits, and 4 strikeouts, and the bullpen combined for 3.1 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 run, and striking out 5 batters. And for the bats, they were hitting on all cylinders. The offense had 12 runs and 13 hits, Lindor went 3/6 with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs, Pete Alonso went 1/4 with a 2-run home run, Tyrone Taylor had a 3/4 game with a home run and a RBI single, and Jeff McNeil continued his hot run going 2/5 with 2 RBI’s.
Those 2 wins gave the Mets their 4th win against the Yankees this season. Now sitting at the 2nd Wild Card spot the Mets face the Braves in a 4-game series at Citi Field. The Braves hold the 1st Wild Card spot with the Mets only sitting 1.5 games back of them.
