Mets Split with Marlins

Coming off the All-Star break the red-hot Mets headed down to Miami to face the Marlins where they split the series 2-2.
In the first game of the series, the Mets had pitcher Sean Manaea on the mound and faced off against Edward Cabrera who was coming off a 7-run outing 6 days prior. Sean Manaea did not look like himself on this outing, throwing 5 innings, 8 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk, and just 1 strikeout but Edward Cabrera for the Marlins did well, pitching 4.2 innings, 1 ER, 5 hits, 5 walks, and 1 strikeout. Throughout the game, Jeff McNeil hit 2 home runs which was his first multiple-home-run game since 2019, one being a solo shot and the other being a 2-run homer to bring in Jose Iglesias and JD Martinez hit a sac fly in the 5th to bring home Lindor, those 4 runs would be the only runs the Mets scored. When Sean Manaea was pulled after 5 innings Dedniel Núñez came into the game in the 8th after Phil Maton and Adam Ottavino both pitched 2 clean innings in the 6th and 7th and Núñez came in and pitched 0.2 innings giving up 1 run, 1 hit, and 2 walks. The game would end 6-4 in a loss for the Mets.
In the second game of the series, both teams combined for 10 hits with the Mets winning 1-0. The starter for the Mets was Luis Severino who pitched 6 innings, giving up 2 hits, 3 walks, 0 runs, and 7 K’s, after Jose Butto came into pitch for 1 inning, giving up 0 hits, 0 runs, and 2 strikeouts, Dedniel Núñez pitched the 8th inning and gave up 2 hits, 0 runs, and 3 strikeouts, at the end of the game Edwin Diaz came into pitch to get the save. He did pitching a shutout with 0 hits and 1 strikeout. On the offensive side, the only run came in the 4th inning when Fransisco Alvarez grounded into fielder's choice to bring home Pete Alonso. That win pushed the Mets to 50-47 and helped the Mets continue to hold the 3rd Wild Card spot in the NL.
Mets rookie Christian Scott took the mound against Marlins Trevor Rogers in the 3rd game of the series. Scott pitched the first 4 innings, throwing 4 K’s, allowing 7 hits, 3 runs, and 2 walks, for the Marlins Rogers pitched 4.2 innings and gave up the only 2 runs the Mets scored. On offense for the Mets, Luis Torrens hit a sacrifice fly, Alonso scored, and JD Martinez singled to left to bring Bader home. The game ended 4-2, a loss for the Mets and their 3rd loss in the past 4 games.
In the 4th and final game of the series, the Mets won 6-4 and moved to 51-48 on the year. The game started well for the Mets, scoring 2 runs in the top of the 2nd with Jeff McNeil hitting a 2-run bomb to right field, the Marlins followed up with 1 run in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Vidal Bruján hit a double. The Mets extended their lead in the 4th and 5th innings with Jeff McNeil hitting a sac fly, Lindor solo homer, and Jose Iglesias was hit by pitch when the bases were loaded. In the 5th and 7th innings, the Marlins scored from a Josh Bell solo home run and Bryan De La Cruz also hit a solo home run. In the 9th and final inning, both teams scored 1 run with Lindor hitting his second solo home run and Josh Bell grounding out to second to bring in a run. The game ended 6-4 with Edwin Diaz getting the save.
Now the Mets still hold the 3rd and last Wild Card spot but they are only 0.5 back from the Cardinals who have the 2nd Wild Card spot. The Mets are headed back to New York but will play in the Bronx in a 2 game series against the Yankees.
