The New York Mets are staying red hot after a sweep against the Red Sox in a 3-game homestand to extend their win streak to 7 as they chase an NL Wild Card spot.
The Mets extended their winning streak to 5 after a 4-1 win in the first game of the series. New York Mets righty Luis Severino was on the mound and was coming off a 4-run outing in Arizona and was looking to bounce back. He bounced backed great, pitching 7 innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 run, and striking out 5 batters. In the batter's box for the Red Sox Jarren Duran scored the only run for them when he hit an RBI single to bring home Ceddanne Rafaela. On offense for the Mets, Starling Marte grounded into a double play for an RBI, Nimmo hit an RBI double, Torrens hit an RBI double and Fransisco Lindor continued his MVP-contending season with an RBI single to bring home Luis Torrens. The Mets won the game with Phil Maton getting his first save for the Mets and put the Mets 10 games over .500 for the first time since October of 2022.
In the second game of the series, the Mets grabbed a 7-2 win. On the mound for the Mets was David Peterson who was pitching on his 29th birthday, and he had a career day. He went 6 innings, allowed 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and a career-high 11 strikeouts. This huge game dropped his ERA down to a 2.75. On offense in the bottom of the 3rd Fransisco Lindor hit a 2 run home run to raise the apple and bring out the MVP chants, Vientos hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 7th, and yet again Lindor hit an RBI double that was followed up by stolen base. The Mets offense didn’t stop there, Nimmo hit a sac fly and Pete Alonso hit a 2-run home run to put the icing on the cake in the 8th inning. The Mets would go on to win with game 7-2 with Ryne Stanek getting the save.
In the series finally, as the Mets went for the sweep they showed out again, winning 8-3. The game started huge for the Mets as they got up early with a Jesse Winker grand slam in the bottom of the 1st innings. The Red Sox cut the lead to just 1 run in the 3rd inning when Duran, Devers, and Abreu all had RBIs. There were no actions until the 8th inning when the Mets locked in with this win as the Red Sox allowed 3 walked runs and a Harrison Bader sacrifice fly. Edwin Diaz closed out the game with a 3-out save pushing the Mets to an 8-3 win.
The Mets are now on an MLB best 7 game win streak and will have a day off until the next series, home against the Reds. The Mets will continue to fight for a playoff spot as they are 0.5 games back from the Braves.
