The Mets took 2/3 from the red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks to hand the D-Backs their first home series loss since June.
In the first game of the series, the Mets were clicking on all cylinders with Sean Manaea pitching outstandingly and the Mets offense scoring 8 runs. The righty Sean Manaea pitched 6.2 innings allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, and striking out 11 batters, his first 6 innings were scoreless and allowed 3 hits. In the bullpen, Reid Garrett, Phil Maton, Danny Young, and Adam Ottavino combined for 2.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and 0 runs. On offense, things started in the 2nd inning with a Pete Alonso solo home run and a Jeff McNeil RBI to put the Mets up 2-0. The rest of the Mets runs would be scored in the 5th inning with a Fransisco Alvarez RBI single, Mark Vientos RBI single, Jesse Winker sacrifice fly, Tyrone Taylor hit by pitch, Jeff McNeil walks and JD Martinez scoring on an error, all put the Mets up by 8 runs. The game finished with the Mets winning 8-3.
The next game of the series did not go well for the Mets. The game started early for Arizona as they hit 2 home runs and scored 4 runs in the first 4 innings while shutting out the Mets in those 4 innings. By that point starting pitcher Luis Severino was pulled after allowing 4 runs and 8 hits in 4.2 innings. On offense, the Mets tied the game 4-4 by the top of the 5th inning when JD Martinez and Fransisco Alvarez both hit RBI singles and Harrison Bader hit a 2-run homerun. In the 6th inning, the Mets grabbed a 5-4 lead after Pete Alonso hit a sacrifice fly. The Mets held the lead until the bottom of the 8th inning when Edwin Diaz came in and gave up a grand slam to Corbin Carroll which gave the Diamondbacks an 8-5 and would be the final score.
In the series decider, the Mets had a late-game rally to beat the Diamondbacks 3-2. Lefty David Peterson was on the mound and continued his hot streak by pitching 7 innings, allowing 7 hits, 2 runs, and striking out 4 batters to bring his ERA down to 2.83. On the Mets offense, the team combined for 2 home runs with Pete Alonso and Fransisco Lindor hitting solo home runs. In the top of the 9th, the Mets were tied at 2 until Jose Iglesias hit a go-ahead single to put the Mets up 3-2. The game would finish with Edwin Diaz getting the save and the Mets winning 3-2.
This win would improve the Mets to 70-64 on the season and 2.5 games back from the Braves who hold the third wild card spot. The Mets now head into Chicago to face the historically bad White Sox in a 3rd game series.
